  7.           NOTE: Due to light registration, this may be the last disk
  8.           of graphic images I distribute as shareware. However, I want
  9.           to sincerely thank all of you who did register their use of
  10.           HORNBACK PCX ARTWORK and SOFTSCENE PCX ARTWORK VERSION 2.0.
  11.           Your favorable comments were the bright spot of many of my
  12.           days; and, again, my thanks.  Also, I want to thank in
  13.           advance all those who will register this version (or volume)
  14.           of PCX images.

  16.           These hand-drawn 29 graphic pictures are provided in the PCX
  17.           file format.  YOU WILL NEED A SEPARATE PROGRAM (NOT PROVIDED
  18.           ON THIS DISK) TO PRINT OR EVEN VIEW THESE PICTURES. If you
  19.           don't already have a program that accepts PCX format files,
  20.           there are many programs available both as shareware and
  21.           commercially which accept PCX format graphic images. Some
  22.           programs that accept PCX format files are as follows:

  55.           files. If your program accepts other file formats, you may
  56.           be able to convert these PCX files to the format you need
  57.           using one of the utility programs listed above.

  61.           to be distributed as shareware. You are encouraged to make
  62.           copies for your friends (make sure this README.DOC and

  69.           The graphic pictures on this disk(s) are most often used to
  70.           enhance letters, newsletters, and other periodicals that are
  71.           produced using desk top publishing (DTP) programs or a word
  72.           processing (WP) programs that allow you to import PCX images
  73.           (though technically called "word processors", some of the
  74.           commercial WP programs have evolved into DTP programs).

  78.                                THE ARTWORK
  79.  
  80.           All of the graphic images on this disk consist of black and
  81.           white images that were hand drawn by Steve Hornback.  I have
  82.           tried to produce high quality artwork.  If you obtained the
  83.           first or second disks of graphics I produced, you should
  84.           like these pictures even better. The aspect ratio (see
  85.           below) can be preserved when resizing.  The pictures consist
  86.           mainly of outdoor scenes.

  88.                                ASPECT RATIO
  89.  
  90.           The ASPECT RATIO is the height of the picture compared to
  91.           its width. These pictures were created using patterns (of
  92.           dots) to give grays for shading effects. If you resize the
  93.           picture by increasing the height without increasing the
  94.           width proportionally by the same amount, the patterns may
  95.           become distorted resulting in "tartan bands".  If you see
  96.           this occur, most DTP programs have an option to preserve or
  97.           ignore the original aspect ratio (in Ventura you pick
  98.           "Aspect Distorted" to ignore the aspect ratio). If you
  99.           preserve the aspect ratio, you can still resize the picture
  100.           (make it bigger or smaller); but the height and width will
  101.           remain correct proportionally - banding of patterns will be
  102.           avoided. But you can often ignore the aspect ratio with
  103.           satisfactory results, so experiment.  With all the pictures
  104.           on this disk, you can preserve the aspect ratio (or not).

  106.              HINT!!      **** IMPORTANT NOTE ****         HINT!!

  108.           If you don't have Aspect Ratio control, or even if you do,
  109.           I have found a formula for printing the pictures perfectly
  110.           based on the resolution of your printer. First you must know
  111.           the resolution of your printer in dots per inch (DPI). Your
  112.           printer manual should tell you this. For laser printers this
  113.           resolution is often 300 x 300 DPI. For my 24 pin dot matrix
  114.           printer the resolution is 180 x 180 DPI. All but two of
  115.           these pictures are 640 pixels (or dots) wide by 480 pixels
  116.           high (one VGA screen full). So use the following formula to
  117.           calculate the height and width you should make the picture:

  119.               640 pixels (or dots)
  120.           ------------------------------   =  PICTURE WIDTH IN INCHES
  121.           PRINTER RESOLUTION WIDTH (DPI)

  124.               480 pixels (or dots)
  125.           ------------------------------   =  PICTURE HEIGHT IN INCHES
  126.           PRINTER RELOLUTION HEIGHT (DPI)

  128.           If I use the 300 x 300 laser resolution as an example in the
  129.           above equations, I come up with 2.133 inches wide and 1.60
  130.           inches high.  If I then make my picture just this size, it
  131.           will print perfectly. If your resolution has some strange
  132.           numbers (such as 140 x 175) and you don't know which is the
  133.           height and width, try it both ways (one will be the right
  134.           way).

  136.           After you calculate the height and width of the picture, you
  137.           can then double, triple, etc. these heights and widths to
  138.           make the picture larger. So we could double the picture size
  139.           in the laser example above to 4.266 inches wide and 3.2
  140.           inches high, and we'd get a larger picture that still prints
  141.           perfectly.

  143.           I have been asked to provide an instruction manual on how to
  144.           use these graphics with all or most DTP and word processing
  145.           programs.  I'm sorry, but I'm not expert enough with enough
  146.           programs to provide such comprehensive help. I can't even
  147.           afford Ventura or Aldus, much less tell you how to use them.

  149.                              MORE ON PRINTERS
  150.  
  151.           The resolution of your printer will significantly affect the
  152.           printed output of these graphics.  As you make the image
  153.           smaller with lower resolution printers, grays may appear as
  154.           blacks  (this is a common occurrence with many dot matrix
  155.           printers). What happens is that the individual printed dots
  156.           run together making blacks. This can be solved by making the
  157.           image larger before printing. Again, experiment.

  159.           Higher resolution printers (such as laser printers) do not
  160.           have a problem here unless the image is made exceedingly
  161.           small.

  165.           you do like them, I'd love to hear from you (especially if a
  166.           registration fee is included.  There is a registration form
